May 17, 2011 Essay

I've always believed that the success of a company is not evaluated by their image, but by the employees's efforts to assist in making the company a success. In the article "Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination" by Steven Greenhouse, it gives us one example of how Abercrombie and Fitch hire their employees based on how well they can represent the company image. Greenhouse states that Abercrombie has an aggressive approach to building a pretty and handsome sales force. In my opinion, I consider this kind of tactic to be discriminating.
On one hand, hiring employees based on looks can be seen as discriminating. On the other hand, companies see it as a marketing technique to assist in the company's success.  The idea of hiring employees based on the company's image doesn't give much opportunities to other people who might not be sexy, slim, or simply good looking. In my opinion, a company should hire employees that have some knowledge or experience in the work place. Good looks will not get you through life, it may have worked in middle school or possibly high school, but at a job there needs to be effort put in. The best employees are not always the best looking, and i think companies should consider that.
My conclusion, then, is that if a company wants to be successful that they hire employees the smart way. A company that hires people that project the image might be successful for a while, but if there is no experience on the job there might as well be no success.

In the article "Going the Look, But Risking Discrimination; by Steven Greenhouse" the author states that "Some companies have been skirting the edges of anti- discrimination laws," this phrase means that companies are not necessarily breaking the law, but are on the verge of doing so. Greenhouse mentions that companies are hiring people based on looks, and not by actual work experience. On one hand business owners look at this as a marketing strategy, on the other hand people see this the same way as being discriminated based on sex, race, or religion.

The phrase "skirting the edges of anti-discrimination laws"  is used in this context to explain how employers are barely avoiding lawsuits by saying that they're hiring people that project the image of the company/brand. While it might seem like discrimination to not hire someone based on how they look,  it's not a crime to try and sell the company image through its employees.

High School is meant to give us the final push into the real world,  the final lessons taught are important to us students. In our experiences in high school, all we've learned is that the older teachers tend to get off track easily.Chemistry class should be about the elements and all that scientific, but in Mrs. Nations class we ended up learning how her kids like "nice mommy" more and how much it costs to ride her sons rocket.
