May 17, 2011 Essay

I've always believed that the success of a company is not evaluated by their image, but by the employees's efforts to assist in making the company a success. In the article "Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination" by Steven Greenhouse, it gives us one example of how Abercrombie and Fitch hire their employees based on how well they can represent the company image. Greenhouse states that Abercrombie has an aggressive approach to building a pretty and handsome sales force. In my opinion, I consider this kind of tactic to be discriminating.
On one hand, hiring employees based on looks can be seen as discriminating. On the other hand, companies see it as a marketing technique to assist in the company's success.  The idea of hiring employees based on the company's image doesn't give much opportunities to other people who might not be sexy, slim, or simply good looking. In my opinion, a company should hire employees that have some knowledge or experience in the work place. Good looks will not get you through life, it may have worked in middle school or possibly high school, but at a job there needs to be effort put in. The best employees are not always the best looking, and i think companies should consider that.
My conclusion, then, is that if a company wants to be successful that they hire employees the smart way. A company that hires people that project the image might be successful for a while, but if there is no experience on the job there might as well be no success.

In the article "Going the Look, But Risking Discrimination; by Steven Greenhouse" the author states that "Some companies have been skirting the edges of anti- discrimination laws," this phrase means that companies are not necessarily breaking the law, but are on the verge of doing so. Greenhouse mentions that companies are hiring people based on looks, and not by actual work experience. On one hand business owners look at this as a marketing strategy, on the other hand people see this the same way as being discriminated based on sex, race, or religion.

Today in class we reviewed the writing assignments we posted yesterday. We discussed and practiced fixing awkward sentences. We reviewed that we have to get used to the strategy of "spending words wisely."

May 4, 2011 Writing Assignment

The phrase "skirting the edges of anti-discrimination laws"  is used in this context to explain how employers are barely avoiding lawsuits by saying that they're hiring people that project the image of the company/brand. While it might seem like discrimination to not hire someone based on how they look,  it's not a crime to try and sell the company image through its employees.

In our opinion, companies should hire whoever they want. Its not the person who reflects the company but the quality of work that comes out of him or her. Companies tend to hire the people that go with their image because in the end companies want to sell their image so you will remember the company.

In Hacsi's article, "Stop Waiting for a Savior," from The New York Times, he argues that experience is not necessary an that we should solve the problem and not wait for someone to do it for us. I agree, the time spent looking for someone can be used to solve the problems in the schools.

Today in class, we reviewed a student essay written about "The Last Meow" by Burkhard Bilger. In this essay we focused on the templates and if they were properly executed. The templates that we mainly focused on were:
On one hand blah blah blah blah blah, on the other hand blah blah blah blah blah.

Today in class we reviewed that templates are very useful to make writing understandable. We reviewed  an essay without a template and the information seemed all over the place and unorganized. Then we went over one that did use several templates and all the information was threaded together and well complimented.

Victor:  My essay took a more of a pathos filled approach followed by statistics pulled out of then essay, I think my approach was an efficient way to illustrate the point the author tries to make because the contrast between the pathos and logos, makes it flow smoothly.

Cesar:
Compared to the essay we reviewed in class, my essay had more personal opinions and examples that completed most of the writing, examples were pulled out of the essay to strengthen my opinion.

Today in class we discussed what a great essay is. According to the EPT scoring guide a perfect essay is graded as a 6. We went over what is needed to create a 6 grade essay. You need  to address the topic completely and thoroughly, it needs to address the opposing viewpoints, it uses specific details, has smooth transitions between ideas, and have little to no grammatical errors.

03/09/11 Essay

In Bilger’s passage, he seems to be supporting the idea that there is too much money being spent on pets, wether its for medical reasons or spending for supplies. The amount spent on animals has gone up to extraordinary numbers and in my opinion, it will continue to rise as long as the pet is considered “part of the family”. In only seven years, the amount spent on pets’ veterinary care went from $11 billion to $19 billion; thats not including the cost of pet food and other supplies.
Americans today tend to agree that pets are family, and no just an animal that is being cleaned up after. For some people, pets fill a void that most americans have; wether its replacing a child that has gone off to college, or just being treated as an unborn child completely.
I’ve always believed that a pet can make a good companion and that the love for them would grow the more they are around. I have a dog that I care for, but I would not go to such means as to waste $5,000 for a kidney transplant. In my opinion, why put an animal through so much trouble?
Although Bilger doesn’t come out and say it, he might think that some Americans are crazy to be spending so much amount of money on a pet. On one hand, while some may agree with that, others might disagree and say that a loved animal is worth all the money in the world.
In this passage, Bilger states that our love affair with our pets has gotten out of control. But, who can stop the feelings that you might develop for an animal that will always be by your side if its treated well. The way american spend money on pets is up to that individual person.

  1. The main points the author tries to make are: how important pets are to families and the extreme measures that people go through to keep their pets.
  2. The author uses a lot of pathos in his writing to enhance the point he’s trying to make. Like when he compares his trucks to the cats. He compares his passion for hot rods to his love for Lady.
  3. The logic in this article is when the author is describing the operation and the consequences that go along with an operation this delicate.
  4. In our opinion the pathos holds more of an impact.
  5. We agree with the author that pets aren’t just another animal, and that something should be done when they’re sick or hurt, but we disagree when he describes people that spend close to fifty thousand dollars on them when there might be something more important you could be doing with the money. I love my pets, but i don’t think i’ll be spending fifteen thousand dollar on them if I need to pay my house bills and other expenses.

Our reaction to part 1 of The Last Meow is shock to the information that we learned about Shawn Levering  and his family. The vivid details it provided made it easy for us to get into the story. If i was in their position I would not go all the way to New York to save an already dying cat. I love pets, but for the financial situation they're in, it just doesn't seem logical to go through all this trouble. By what we have read so, I can get a mental picture of what type of man Shawn is. Shawn Levering, in my opinion, is a man that is devoted to take care of anything that he own, as told by how much time he spends working on his cars.

There are many things that we learned in class today: what a descriptive paragraph is, what a contrast paragraph is, how to use a colon, we reviewed how an essay should hold hands, and brushed up on our pathos and logos.
A descriptive paragraph is a paragraph that introduces ideas and describes them in detail. A contrast paragraph is a type of writing that compares a new idea with and idea that has been already introduced. When a paragraph holds hands, the new paragraph references the previous paragraph. Pathos is the emotional aspect in a writing piece and logos is the logic in the writing

1. The title of our next essay is "The Last Meow." What do you think this essay will be about and why?
My predictions for this essay are that there are pets with rare diseases that can kill or severely hurt the creature. Another prediction that  have is that the diseases can be passed to the owner and therefore endangering the life of the owner.

2. How important are pets in your life and in the lives of the people you know?

Pets are a big part in my life. Having that companionship unbreakable by any force is nice. My dogs are up there with my family in what I love. If anything were to ever happen to them I don't know what I would do.

Vocab. Paragraph

As Sally stared into Seymour's hypnotizing eyes, her face became ruddy. As their visions locked the world transformed. She thought she was in love, but realized her vision was bad, so she went to the ophthalmologist. The doctor called the oncologist who found a tumor in her eyes. To add to the sadness she is also anemic. Nothing has ever worked out for Sally since her baby brother was born congenitally blind. She sat at home one day, in retrospect, thinking about her bad life. Suddenly she grabbed her bags and was borne away into the night. As Sally walked down the dark road, she encountered a mayo clinic. As she walked in she looked around and saw how utilitarian a tooth brush was, she always took them for granted. Her intent was to steal a tooth brush to brush her teeth. She sat on the chair waiting to be called up and she over heard a conversation between two people about religion and science, she noticed the dichotomy between the two topics and thought it was funny how heated the talk got. She started to doze off and the usual clientele showed up, your typical bum, poor people, and even the crazy cat lady down the street from her house. The crazy cat lady brought her cat in with her, she said to her self "Who does that?" to her luck the cat was shedding and dander flew everywhere. Sally pulled out her albuteral inhaler, for you see sally also had a very bad case of asthma.

What is the main point that Drehle makes? Does the author of the student essay your are considering address that point? What do you think about his claims, especially in light of the quick poll that we took at the beginning of class? How does this affect the author's ethos (his or her integrity; how much faith we have in his argument)? How does this essay compare to Victor's essay?

Drehles main point is that summer enrichment programs end the problem of the summer slide, but with the economy the way it is they're aren't as many programs as we need. The students essay does address that point in some parts, but trails off in others. In my opinion the student's claims make sense, once you ask an older person they would say yes, but if you ask a younger child they would say no.

Purple Thumb Day

The purple thumb became a symbol of democracy in the Iraqi election in 2005. Many women voted and showed off their thumb. This showed that iraq is moving in the right direction towards a democratic government. In 2008, "purple thumb" was referenced when Barack Obama won the presidential election
because of the large amount of votes.
